The Lésio-Louna Gorilla Nature Reserve
Explore the Lésio-Louna Nature Reserve
Located in the heart of the Batéké Plateau, about 140 kilometers north of Brazzaville, the Lésio-Louna Reserve is one of the most remarkable ecotourism sites in the Republic of the Congo. Established primarily to protect the region’s biodiversity and facilitate the reintroduction of western lowland gorillas into their natural habitat, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to encounter one of Central Africa’s most iconic species.
Furthermore, its proximity to Brazzaville makes it a particularly attractive destination for exploring the Congo’s landscapes and wildlife without having to travel several hundred kilometers across the country.
Landscapes ranging from savanna to forest to rivers
Crossed by the Lésio, Louna, and Léfini rivers, the reserve reveals a veritable mosaic of landscapes. Visitors will discover vast savannas, gallery forests, lush green hills, and numerous waterways that flow through the Batéké Plateau.
Thanks to this diversity of natural habitats, the reserve is also home to a remarkable array of wildlife. Gorillas, buffalo, duikers, monkeys, crocodiles, hippos, and numerous species of birds can be seen in various parts of the reserve.
In addition, boat tours allow visitors to explore the reserve from its rivers, while the trails that wind through the savanna offer another way to explore these vast natural areas.
Watch the gorillas at Lésio-Louna
The encounter with the gorillas at Lésio-Louna is, of course, one of the highlights of the visit. Some of these great apes, once victims of poaching or wildlife trafficking, are being cared for as part of a rehabilitation program designed to prepare them for a gradual return to the wild.
Thus, visiting the Lésio-Louna Reserve not only allows visitors to observe gorillas in their natural habitat, but also to better understand the efforts being made to protect and conserve them.
This encounter adds a special dimension to the visit: beyond simply observing the animals, it offers a chance to learn about the challenges involved in preserving biodiversity in the Congo Basin.
What is there to do in the Lésio-Louna Reserve?
However, the reserve offers more than just gorilla viewing. In fact, there are several activities that allow visitors to explore the diversity of its landscapes and wildlife.
During a stay in Lésio-Louna, visitors can enjoy river safaris, hikes through the savanna, excursions into the heart of the Batéké Plateau, and wildlife-viewing trips.
Finally, the rivers, hills, and vast natural landscapes offer numerous panoramic views that are an integral part of the experience.
