Dzanga-Sangha National Park: An Exceptional Expedition Departing from the Congo

Departing from Brazzaville, this unique adventure takes you to the heart of one of the planet’s last great primary forests: Dzanga-Sangha National Park, located in the southwestern part of the Central African Republic. Accessible by traveling through the vast forests of northern Republic of the Congo to Bayanga, this exceptional destination offers a total immersion in one of the best-preserved ecosystems in the Congo Basin.

Dzanga-Sangha is a true sanctuary of biodiversity where nature still reigns supreme. This pristine equatorial forest is home to the famous Western lowland gorillas, forest elephants, forest buffalo, bongos, sitatungas, chimpanzees, and an incredible variety of birds and primates.

One of the highlights of the trip is encountering the Western Lowland gorillas. Accompanied by experienced trackers, you’ll set out in search of a family accustomed to human presence. Making your way through the forest, amid giant vines and century-old trees, is an integral part of the experience. Then comes the magical moment: watching an imposing silverback, the females, and their young move freely through their natural habitat. A rare and deeply moving encounter that ranks among the most beautiful wildlife experiences in Africa.

The park is also famous for its magnificent baïs—vast natural clearings that dot the dense forest. The most spectacular of these, Dzanga Bai, attracts dozens of forest elephants every day that come to feed on mineral salts. From a prime vantage point, you’ll witness a fascinating spectacle: elephants, buffalo, and other wild animals gather in this immense clearing in the middle of the forest. The scenes of wildlife that unfold there offer exceptional viewing opportunities and unforgettable memories.

This trip is also an encounter with the Ba’Aka, an indigenous people of the equatorial rainforest. Renowned for their extraordinary knowledge of this environment, the Ba’Aka share with visitors their traditions, their polyphonic songs, their hunting techniques, their knowledge of medicinal plants, and their worldview, which is intimately connected to the forest. These moments of exchange offer a chance to discover a unique, ancestral culture in the heart of the Congo Basin.

From gorilla watching to exploring elephant-filled swamps, immersing yourself in Ba’Aka culture, and exploring the rainforest, this expedition departing from the Congo is one of Central Africa’s greatest nature adventures. An exceptional experience for travelers seeking authenticity, meaningful human connections, and unspoiled wilderness.
