Conkouati-Douli National Park: Between the Forest, the Mangroves, and the Atlantic Ocean

Located about 150 kilometers north of Pointe-Noire, on the Atlantic coast of the Republic of the Congo, Conkouati-Douli National Park is one of the most exceptional natural areas in Central Africa. Unique in the Congo, it protects equatorial forests, lagoons, mangroves, coastal savannas, ocean beaches, and the mouths of several rivers that flow into the Atlantic Ocean.

The park is renowned for its remarkable biodiversity. It is home to chimpanzees, western lowland gorillas, buffalo, sitatungas, crocodiles, and a multitude of bird species. Visitors also have the opportunity to observe the famous forest elephants, which are sometimes spotted along the beaches or in coastal clearings—a rare and fascinating sight.

One of the park’s highlights is its impressive estuary, where the waters of the forest meet the Atlantic Ocean. With its lagoons, estuaries, sandbars, and natural channels, the landscape offers spectacular views. The vast mangrove forests that line the coast provide a vital refuge for many animal species and contribute to the site’s ecological richness.

Canoe excursions allow visitors to explore the lagoons and mangroves, while guided hikes offer the opportunity to discover the rainforest and follow in the footsteps of large mammals. Depending on the season, the park’s beaches also welcome several species of sea turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs.

Just a few hours’ drive from Pointe-Noire, Conkouati-Douli offers a unique experience where the equatorial forest meets the ocean. From wildlife viewing and boat trips through the mangroves to exploring Atlantic beaches and immersing yourself in one of the most beautiful natural sanctuaries in the Congo Basin, this park is one of Central Africa’s most remarkable ecotourism destinations.
